Importance of the places and facts

In our sanatan granth and books mathura city is mentioned as one of the luxurious cities in India at that time. This city is situated on the bank of Yamuna river. This city is a very very ancient city of India.  It has been known by various names like sursen nagri, madhupuri, madhunagari, madhura etc.

We find its importance in Garudpuran and Padhmapuran. 

Mathura in Garudpuran

As per garud puran sapt puri of moksha describe as 7 cities of moksha. These are the 7 cities described as holi cities where a human should go and do some good works for his life. These 7 cities are 

  1. Ayodhaya
  2. Mathura
  3. Hridwar ( Maya )
  4. Kashi ( Varanasi )
  5. Kanchi (Kanchipuram)
  6. Avantika (Ujjain)
  7. Dwarka ( Dwarikadhis )

Mathura in Padhmapuran

As per mathura in Padhmapuran, this city is described as a blessed city and moksha giving city like kashi and other dham.

Places to visit here

Mathura is a beautiful city. Very less crowded than vrindavan. This is the city of temples, ghats and ashrams. Below you will see the list these are in order according to the distances.

Temples

  1. Pench mukhi shivling ( Near vishram ghat )
  2. Dwarkadhish Temple – This is near to vishram ghat. – Just 2 min walk from vishram ghat. This temple is dedicated to the Dwarikadhish shri krishna.
  3. Kansa tola / Kansa teela / Kansa Quila
  4. Krishna janma bhumi or Sri Krishna Janam Sthan – Janma stal is 3 KM from vishram ghat. There are 2 places, a temple and a garbh griha where it is believed that shree krishna took birth over there. Timing of this temple is in winters 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM. In summer 6:30 AM – 9:00 PM. This temple closed in the afternoon around 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
  5. Adi Keshav temple or Keshav Dev Temple – Just behind Krishna janma bhumi Mathura.
  6. Shri Bhuteshwar Mahadev Temple – 1 KM from krishna janma bhumi mathura. It will take around 7 min from Shri Krishna janma bhoomi temple.
  7. Birla temple or geeta temple – This is famous for its design and vastukala. This temple is dedicated to lord laxmi narayan. Timings are 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM

Ashram

  1. Durbhasha rishi ashram – This is the ashram of Durbhasa rishi. To reach here you have to travel by boat and cross the yamuna river. 

Museum

  1. Mathura museum – Ticket price is Rs 5 for adults, Rs 2 for children, Rs 25 for foreigners, Rs 20 for camera . Timing 10:30 AM – 4:30 PM.

Ghats and sarovar

Here in Mathura there are a total 25 ghats.

  1. Vishram Ghat – This is the main ghat. This is the famous ghat where you can pray to the river Yamuna. In the evening 6 PM vishram ghat for arti of yamuna river took place. 
  2. Bangali Ghat – Here you can rent boats.     
  3. Srinagar ghat – Here you can do srinagar of yamuna ji through boating.  
  4. Kusum sarovar – Opens 24 hours. It is famous for its architecture.

Days need to stay here

You can stay as many days exploring the life of shri krishna here. But if you want to visit it to explore the sights then it will take hardly 2 days to visit everything in mathura. For gokul and vrindavan its different. 2 days only to explore ghats, temples and boating.

Distance from Agra to Mathura – 60 KM

Delhi to Mathura – 180 KM

Nearest railways in Mathura 

  1. Mathura Junction ( MTJ )  – Grade A station – 100 to 200 trains come to this station.
  2. Mathura Cant ( MRT ) – Grade D station – 2 to 20 trains come to this station.

There is no airport in Mathura.

  1. Nearest Airport is Kheria Airport (AGR) in Agra – 50-55 kilometers from Mathura. 
  2. Then Indira Gandhi International airport Delhi (DEL) – 156 KM – 2 hr 46 min away.

  2. Shree Tilakdwar Aggarwal Dharmshala Holi Gate (Near Railway Station)
  3. Birla Dharamshala – Mathura

Total cost to stay here

The below cost plan is the cheapest cost plan. This is for staying, eating and travelling in Mathura only. But there are other expenses like shopping or donation etc which are not included.

Cost for 2 people for 1 day or 24 hour  – 

Staying in Dharmashala for 24 hour – Rs 700

Best season

Besides monsoon you can visit other seasons as during monsoon river yamuna get flooded. The best month to visit Mathura is from October to April.

Shopping

  1. Tilak dwar or pavitra dwar – It is a market in between dwarkadhis temple and vishram ghat. Evening timing is the best timing for shopping.

Must Not do

  1. Do not throw litter here and there. 
  2. There is no electronic item allowed in krishna jamna stal temple

Holi is celebrated very specially over here. It is famous for its history and for its food and mainly for shree krishna. You can enjoy 2 days very beautifully. So this is a must visit place.
